Iris Paola Garcia Herrera: Antiphospholipid Antibodies in Children Beyond Thrombosis
Iris Paola Garcia Herrera, Clinical Research Physician at Hospital para el Niño Poblano, shared a post on LinkedIn about a recent article, published in Frontiers, adding:
“I’m pleased to share our latest research publication in Frontiers in Pediatrics, within the Pediatric Rheumatology section.
Non thrombotic manifestations in pediatric patients with persistent antiphospholipid antibodies: A Mexican tertiary center case series.
Antiphospholipid antibodies are traditionally associated with thrombotic events.
However, their clinical relevance in pediatric patients may extend beyond thrombosis, with manifestations that remain insufficiently characterized.
In this retrospective case series, we described 18 pediatric patients with persistently positive antiphospholipid antibodies and non thrombotic manifestations who did not meet the diagnostic criteria for antiphospholipid syndrome.
Some of our key findings included:
- Hematological manifestations were the most prevalent, affecting 72.2 percent of patients.
- Thrombocytopenia was the most frequently observed manifestation.
- Neurological involvement was the second most common clinical presentation.
- Anti β2 glycoprotein I was the most frequently detected antibody (83.3 percent).
Our findings highlight the clinical heterogeneity of antiphospholipid antibody positivity in children and the importance of recognizing manifestations beyond thrombosis.
I’m grateful to my co authors and the Pediatric Rheumatology team at Hospital de la Niñez Poblana for their collaboration and dedication to advancing research in this field.
Proud to contribute to pediatric rheumatology research and to share work from Mexico with the international scientific community.”
