Janar Sathananthan: The Importance of Durable Drug Delivery in DCB Therapy

Janar Sathananthan, President Interventional Cardiology at Boston Scientific, shared a post on LinkedIn about a recent article by Pratik Sandesara et al., published in JACC: Cardiovascular Interventions, adding:

“As an interventional cardiologist, I’ve always believed that meaningful innovation is built on strong science, real-world experience and a commitment to improving patient outcomes.

Having spent much of my career treating patients with complex coronary artery disease and managing the challenges that can arise even after a successful stent procedure, I also know how important durable drug delivery is to achieve meaningful outcomes for patients.

And as I’ve had the opportunity to work more closely across our Interventional Cardiology business at Boston Scientific, these beliefs have only strengthened.

That’s why I continue to be encouraged by the growing body of evidence supporting the AGENT Drug-Coated Balloon (DCB), the first U.S. coronary DCB for the treatment of in-stent restenosis (ISR).

What gives me confidence is the consistency of the evidence, from more than 16,000 patients studied and more than 275,000 patients treated worldwide to more than 9,000 U.S. real-world ISR safety outcomes and 0% stent thrombosis through two years in the recent AGENT IDE study.

Most recently, a comparative pre-clinical pharmacokinetic study in JACC: Cardiovascular Interventions further strengthened the evidence supporting AGENT’s drug-delivery technology.

The study evaluated drug uptake and tissue retention across multiple coronary DCB platforms in a pre-clinical model over time, providing insight into how differences in drug delivery may influence tissue exposure.

The findings demonstrated superior drug transfer and sustained tissue retention with paclitaxel compared with limus-based DCB platforms, reinforcing the importance of durable drug delivery in DCB therapy.

As our field advances, I believe it is critical that we remain focused on evidence, patient outcomes and technologies that are both safe and supported by rigorous clinical science.”
