Leonardo Roever: A Consensus Framework for Biomarker Research and Clinical Translation in Stroke
Leonardo Roever, CEO of Brazilian Evidence-Based Health Network, shared on LinkedIn about a recent article by Steffen Tiedt et al, published in The Lancet Neurology:
”Biomarkers for Advancing Stroke Diagnosis and Prognosis
The complexity and incomplete understanding of stroke pathophysiology represent substantial challenges for personalized healthcare and the development of new therapies, as reflected in the neutral results of many randomized clinical trials.
Current clinical algorithms lack the precision needed to diagnose stroke before hospital admission, predict disease progression and recovery, or assess the risk of recurrence.
Biomarkers are urgently needed, but the absence of a robust evidence base hinders their clinical translation.
To lay the groundwork for filling this knowledge gap, an international multidisciplinary panel of stroke experts conducted a literature review that formed the basis for a Delphi consensus process.
The stroke expert panel proposes 17 research priorities and five minimum datasets for stroke biomarker studies, each corresponding to a key domain of stroke care: pre-hospital diagnosis, ischemic stroke progression, atrial heart disease, atherosclerotic plaque vulnerability, and intracerebral hemorrhage.
This framework will promote consistency and collaboration for the discovery, validation, and clinical translation of biomarkers to improve stroke care.”
