Leonardo Roever, CEO of Brazilian Evidence-Based Health Network, shared a post on LinkedIn about a recent article by Jiangqin Wang et al., published in Current Atherosclerosis Reports, adding:
“Glutamine Metabolism: A Metabolic Axis Connecting Vascular Remodeling and Plaque Stability in Atherosclerosis
Atherosclerosis (AS) – the pathological basis of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) – is a chronic, progressive inflammatory disease. Its major clinical events are primarily caused by plaque rupture and subsequent thrombosis.
Growing evidence suggests that metabolic reprogramming is a key regulator of vascular cell phenotypic transitions and plaque progression.
Among the various metabolic pathways, glutamine (Gln) metabolism is of particular interest because it links nutrient availability to vascular cell function – facilitating the supply of carbon and nitrogen, the maintenance of redox homeostasis, and the generation of metabolites involved in epigenetic regulation.
This review summarizes recent advances in Gln metabolism and discusses its regulatory roles in vascular remodeling and plaque stability, focusing on implications for AS pathogenesis and therapeutic strategies.”
