Lucy Rutten: An Important Mechanistic Insight Into Future Vaccine Safety
Lucy Rutten, Senior Scientist at Leiden University, shared on LinkedIn about a recent article she and her colleagues co-authored, adding:
”Proud to share our recent publication in The New England Journal of Medicine.
This international collaboration began in the early phase of investigating rare cases of vaccine-induced immune thrombocytopenia and thrombosis (VITT) following adenoviral vector–based COVID-19 vaccination.
In this study, we elucidate how antibodies initially directed against adenoviral core protein VII can, in rare instances, cross-react with platelet factor 4 (PF4), a key clotting factor, due to a specific somatic mutation (K31E) in the antibody.
These findings provide important mechanistic insight into pathogenesis and future vaccine safety.
It has been a privilege to contribute to this long-standing and highly collaborative effort.”
