Luis Ferreira Moita: Rethinking Sepsis Care Through the Lancet Commission Initiative
Luis Ferreira Moita, Executive Director of Medicine ULisboa for Health Clinical Research and Innovation (MUHCRI) and Associate Professor at the Faculty of Medicine University of Lisbon, shared a post on LinkedIn about a recent article he and his colleagues co-authored, published in The Lancet:
“The Lancet is launching a new commission on sepsis, in which I am honored to participate.
The Lancet Commission on Sepsis is a multidisciplinary initiative established to address the stagnation in global sepsis outcomes.
Sepsis remains a leading cause of death characterized by ‘life-threatening organ dysfunction‘.
Current challenges include a discrepancy in global incidence data, a lack of validated bedside diagnostics, and an outdated immunopathology model that fails to account for complex biological pathways.
Furthermore, the long-term health needs of sepsis survivors remain critically understudied.
The Commission aims to transform care by:
- Systematically appraising sepsis epidemiology and survivorship,
- Redesigning systems to move care beyond the intensive care unit,
- Formulating a roadmap for prevention, innovative identification, and individualized therapeutic approaches.”
