Maha Othman: ISTH-BAT Reference Ranges Validated Across Five Continents in Children

This landmark global multicenter study included 1,168 healthy participants from 7 countries across 5 continents, spanning the pediatric age range of 0–18 years, including both males and females and representing diverse healthcare and socioeconomic settings.
These data provide important global validation of the current ISTH-BAT reference range in healthy children and adolescents.
While the overall reference range of 0–2 remains appropriate for individuals under 18 years, the study highlights an important sex-related difference in adolescents: for females aged 12–17 years, a score of 0–3 may be considered within the normal range, interpreted in conjunction with the clinical context.”
Journal of Thrombosis and Haemostasis shared a post on LinkedIn about a recent article by Yousra Tera et al, adding:
“Global multicenter study establishing the reference range for ISTH-BAT bleeding scores in individuals under 18 years: Communication from the SSC of the ISTH
Healthy participants under 18 (n = 1,168) were recruited across 7 countries and 5 continents to validate ISTH-BAT reference ranges.
The overall range of 0–2 held.
A positive age-related trend in scores more than 0 was significant, and among 12–17 year-old females the 2.5th–97.5th percentile extended to 0–3.”
