Mahesan Subramaniam: Microplastics in Arteries Quadruple Risk of Heart Attack and Stroke

Dato Capt. Mahesan Subramaniam, Co-Founder United Health Tourism, shared a post on LinkedIn:

“Scientists have discovered that tiny plastic particles, known as microplastics, might be sneaking into our arteries and possibly increasing the risk of serious heart problems. In a new study from the University of Campania in Naples, researchers examined tissue from 257 people who had surgery to clear blocked arteries in their neck. They were surprised to find that more than half of the samples contained bits of plastic. About 60 percent had traces of polyethylene, which is used in things like packaging, and around 12 percent had polyvinyl chloride, or PVC, commonly used in pipes and containers.

The study followed patients for almost three years and found that those with microplastics in their artery plaques were more than four times more likely to experience a stroke, heart attack, or even death. This suggests these plastic particles may worsen inflammation and stress in the body, possibly damaging heart tissues and blood vessels over time.”
