N. Mariana S. Vasquez: Five Rules That Help Identify the Cause of Hemolytic Anemia
N. Mariana S. Vasquez, IMG Physician, shared a post on X:
“Hemolytic anemia.
Five rules that will help you solve most questions:
- Spherocytes with negative Coombs test suggest hereditary spherocytosis.
- Spherocytes with positive Coombs test suggest warm autoimmune hemolytic anemia.
- Heinz bodies with bite cells are characteristic of G6PD deficiency.
- Schistocytes with thrombocytopenia – think MAHA (TTP, HUS, DIC).
- Hemoglobinuria with thrombosis at unusual sites suggests PNH.”
