Martha Gulati: How Does Lp(a) Drive Atherosclerosis?
Martha Gulati, Director of the Davis Women Heart Center at Houston Methodist DeBakey Heart and Vascular Center, shared a post on LinkedIn about a recent article she and her colleagues co-authored, adding:
“How does Lp(a) drive atherosclerosis?
- Delivers cholesterol to the arterial wall
- Carries oxidized phospholipids, leading to vascular inflammation
- Interferes with plasminogen, resulting in impaired fibrinolysis
- Promotes an atherothrombotic environment
Understanding these mechanisms strengthens the case for targeted Lp(a) therapies.”
