Michele Romoli: Neurointerventional Workforce Gaps and Stroke Thrombectomy Access in Europe

Michele Romoli, Consultant Neurologist at “Bufalini” Hospital, shared on LinkedIn about a recent article he and his colleagues co-authored, published in European Stroke Journal, adding:

”Improving access to stroke thrombectomy across Europe

Our new open-access article in the European Stroke Organisation Journal looks at how many patients in Europe actually receive endovascular thrombectomy (EVT) and how many neurointerventional specialists we need to treat them.

Across 25 European countries, the percentage of stroke patients receiving EVT ranges from almost zero to about 15%, and the number of neurointerventionalists varies widely between countries.

Countries with more trained specialists and higher EVT rates show lower stroke mortality and disability at the population level (even if we cannot prove causality from this type of data).

Overall, most of european countries (including Italy ) show a critical gap in trained neurointerventionists.

This work shows that workforce, organisation and investment are crucial if we want every eligible patient to reach a centre capable of performing EVT in time.

It also highlights the need for structured training programmes and stronger collaboration between health systems, universities and industry partners (including manufacturers of EVT devices, imaging technologies and digital/AI solutions) to build capacity.

These results support our ongoing commitment to:

  • Strengthen stroke networks and pathways, from emergency access to advanced EVT, rehabilitation and prevention.
  • Invest in specialised teams and infrastructure, working closely with regional and national partners to match European benchmarks.
  • Innovate and collaborate with health & academic institutions and industry to bring cutting-edge stroke care to our citizens.
