NSAIDs and Menstrual Bleeding․ Explaining the Paradox

William Aird, Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School, posted on X:

“Aren’t NSAIDs supposed to cause bleeding?

Generally yes. They inhibit platelets and can cause GI bleeding.

But in the uterus, prostaglandins (PG) are the culprit: too much PGE₂/PGI₂ leads to vasodilation and fibrinolysis, as a result heavy periods. Block COX, results in less PG, results in less bleeding!”
