Rodosthenis Rodosthenous: What if Donating Blood also Helped You Clear Out ‘Forever Chemicals’?

Rodosthenis Rodosthenous, Project Manager at FinnGen, shared a post on LinkedIn about a recent article published in Scientific Reports, co-authored by him and his colleagues, adding:

“What if donating blood also helped you clear out ‘forever chemicals’?

In our latest research, led by Veera Timonen, Jessica Koski, and our collaborators at the Veripalvelu – Finnish Red Cross Blood Service, we found something surprising:

The more frequently people donate blood, the lower their levels of PFAS (‘forever chemicals’) in the bloodstream.

PFAS are persistent, accumulating environmental toxins, and reducing them in the body has been a major challenge.

Seeing an association with blood donation was unexpected and, to our knowledge, not widely documented before.

This is exactly the kind of insight that only emerges by combining multi-dimensional data available in FinnGen.”
