Sheharyar Raza: When More Testing Isn’t Always Better in Healthy Donor Screening

Sheharyar Raza, Transfusion Medicine Specialist and Data Scientist at University Health Network, shared a post on LinkedIn about a recent article he and his colleagues co-authored, adding:

“In medicine we often say, ‘Don’t order a test if you don’t know what to do with the result’. This also applies to donor testing.

Out now in AABB journal Transfusion, co-authors (including Jeremy, Victoria et al) argue that although superficially appealing, extensive ‘wellness panels’ of tests pertormed in healthy people can have unexpected downsides that warrant cautious examination.

More information may not be beneficial when obtained in the presence of uncertain priors or follow-up, and may paradoxically undermine the goals it was sought to achieve.”
