Ethology and Treatment of Iron Deficiency – Sociedad Iberoamericana de Patient Blood Management

Sociedad Iberoamericana de Patient Blood Management shared a post on LinkedIn about a recent article by Joyisa Deb et al., published in Vox Sanguinis adding:

Iron deficiency (ID) is a widespread condition with diverse etiologies in different age groups and patient demographics.

Iron-deficient patients may experience symptoms regardless of whether anemia is present.

Nutritional ID is a major cause, particularly affecting women, adolescent populations in countries of low socioeconomic status, and cohorts of patients with gastrointestinal conditions.

In surgical settings, ID and iron deficiency anemia (IDA) are associated with poor perioperative and postoperative outcomes.

Traditionally, IDA has been treated with oral iron and blood transfusions.

However, the advent of patient blood management (PBM) programs in the late 1990s and early 2000s has promoted alternative therapeutic approaches, including intravenous (IV) iron therapy.”
