Somnath Mukherjee: Evaluating Syphilis Diagnostic Platforms for Safer Blood Transfusions

Somnath Mukherjee, Professor at All India Institute of Medical Sciences Bhubaneswar, shared a post on LinkedIn about a recent article he and his colleagues co-authored, adding:

”Our most recent publication focuses on transfusion-transmitted syphilis, which is becoming a concern due to the potential re-emergence of syphilis. Consequently, robust screening methods are essential to prevent the transmission of syphilis through blood transfusions. This paper provides a comparative evaluation of three diagnostic platforms for syphilis.

An interesting aspect of our findings is that Rapid Diagnostic Tests (RDTs) demonstrated superior diagnostic accuracy compared to VDRL, suggesting their potential utility as a supplementary method in resource-limited environments.”

Title: Prevalence and diagnostic accuracy of syphilis screening in blood donors: A prospective observational study comparing three different serological platforms
