Stefano Romeo: The Cardiovascular Patient Journey is Still Full of Gaps
Stefano Romeo, Professor at University of Gothenburg, shared a post on LinkedIn about a recent article by Julia Brandts and her colleagues co-authored, published in European Journal of Preventive Cardiology, adding:
“We know the risk. But do we act on it?
The cardiovascular patient journey is still full of gaps — and every gap can become a missed opportunity.
In more than 770,000 young adults, only 28 percent of those with LDL-C ≥190 mg/dL had started treatment within 1 year. Even after 5 years, fewer than half had done so.
And the problem does not disappear once cardiovascular disease is established. In INTERASPIRE, only about 1 in 5 people with coronary heart disease reached LDL-C <1.4 mmol/L.
- Risk identified.
- Treatment delayed.
- Targets missed.
These data point to a systems problem: testing, diagnosis, treatment initiation, intensification and follow-up do not always translate into a continuous care pathway.
The next major opportunity in cardiovascular prevention may not only be finding risk earlier — but acting on it earlier and ensuring that people do not get lost along the way.
