Vera Ghali: What Else Do Platelets Do Besides Clotting?
Vera Ghali, Member of the Lebanese Order of Physicians and Lebanese Pediatric Society, shared a post on X:
“A review of the versatile role of platelets.
Platelets bridge the gap between hemostasis, thrombosis, inflammation, and adaptive immunity.
Beyond their classical role in thrombosis and hemostasis, they have an active role in regulating innate and adaptive immunity, angiogenesis, atherosclerosis, lymphangiogenesis, liver regeneration, and tumor metastasis.
They have a central role in life-threatening diseases and pathophysiological processes.
Their contributions act as immune mediators involved in pro-inflammatory responses and immunosuppression.
This newly expanded functional spectrum of platelets can lead to novel opportunities for understanding and treating immune-mediated thrombocytopenia and various other hematological disorders.”
