Zain Khalpey: SINGLE AF Adds New Evidence to the Anticoagulation Debate
Zain Khalpey, Adjunct Assistant Professor of Surgery at Columbia University Irving Medical Center, shared a post on LinkedIn about a recent article by Daehoon Kim et al., published in NEJM, adding:
“New results from the SINGLE-AF trial published in the New England Journal of Medicine add important evidence for patients with atrial fibrillation and intermediate stroke risk.
Among 1,803 patients, DOAC therapy was associated with a lower risk of the composite outcome of stroke, systemic embolism, major bleeding, or cardiovascular death at 24 months compared with no anticoagulation.
The primary endpoint occurred in 0.5% of the DOAC group versus 1.5% without anticoagulation.
Stroke occurred in 0.3% versus 1.1%, while major bleeding appeared similar between groups.
An important randomized trial for a population where anticoagulation decisions can be less straightforward.”
