”Beta Thalassemia Major After Splenectomy: Striking nRBC Count.
I recently reviewed a peripheral blood smear of a patient with beta thalassemia major post-splenectomy and was amazed to see ~1100 nucleated RBCs per 100 WBCs – one of the highest counts I’ve encountered.
It’s fascinating how splenectomy can dramatically alter peripheral blood morphology, allowing such extreme circulating nRBCs.
This case was a great reminder of
• The spleen’s crucial role in filtering abnormal RBCs
• The striking hematologic features of severe thalassemia syndromes
Curious if anyone else has seen counts this high – would love to hear your experiences.”
