Coalition of Blood for Africa Highlights Hidden Anaemia Crisis Threatening Maternal and Child Health

”When people hear anaemia, they often think of tiredness.
But across Africa, anaemia is far more serious – it fuels maternal deaths, stunts child growth, and holds back school performance.
The stats are alarming:
– 36% of pregnant women in Africa are anaemic
– 59% of children under 5 years suffer from anaemia
– Most cases go undiagnosed and untreated
Yet anaemia is preventable and treatable. So why is it being missed?
Because:
– Health systems do not routinely screen for it
– Communities do not always recognize the signs
We must act to:
– Strengthen iron supplementation programs
– Make haemoglobin testing routine
– Improve nutrition through food fortification and community education
Low blood is not a low priority. It is a hidden crisis, and it is time we brought it into the light.”
