”Understanding Blood Cells: The Vital Components of Life
Blood is a remarkable connective tissue that plays a crucial role in transporting nutrients, gases, hormones, and waste products throughout the body. It is composed of three primary cell types, each with a unique and essential function:
Red Blood Cells (RBCs / Erythrocytes)
– Function: Carry oxygen from the lungs to body tissues and remove carbon dioxide.
– Normal Count:
– Males: 4.7β6.1 million/ΞΌL
– Females: 4.2β5.4 million/ΞΌL
– Disorders: Anemia, Polycythemia
White Blood Cells (WBCs / Leukocytes)
– Function: Defend the body against infections and foreign invaders.
– Types: Neutrophils, Lymphocytes, Monocytes, Eosinophils, Basophils
– Normal Count: 4,000β11,000/ΞΌL
– Disorders: Leukopenia, Leukocytosis, Leukemia
Platelets (Thrombocytes)
– Function: Aid in blood clotting and prevent excessive bleeding.
– Normal Count: 150,000β400,000/ΞΌL
– Disorders: Thrombocytopenia, Thrombocytosis, Bleeding Disorders
Together, these components maintain oxygen balance, immune defense, and hemostasis, ensuring our survival and overall health.”
