“Clinical Case | Factor VIII & VWF:
A 25-year-old woman presents with recurrent nosebleeds and prolonged bleeding after dental extractions.
Lab results show:
- VWF activity: 35% (↓)
- VWF antigen: 38% (↓)
- Factor VIII: 42% (↓)
Interpretation:
The parallel reduction in VWF activity, antigen, and Factor VIII suggests Type 1 von Willebrand Disease (vWD) — a quantitative deficiency of VWF leading to secondary reduction of FVIII.
Always interpret FVIII in context with VWF assays — isolated FVIII deficiency points toward Hemophilia A, while combined low VWF & FVIII levels indicate vWD.”
