William Wallace: Circadian Health Is as Vital as Diet and Exercise for Heart Protection
William Wallace, Director of Product Development and Scientific Affairs at ProHealth Longevity, shared on X:
“Your heart runs on a clock, and when that clock falls out of sync, your metabolism and cardiovascular health begin to break down.
What you’re seeing
This figure from the American Heart Association illustrates how circadian rhythms—the body’s internal 24-hour timing system—coordinate functions across the brain, heart, liver, and other organs. When sleep, light exposure, eating, and activity patterns fall out of rhythm, the body’s finely tuned systems lose synchronization.
- The brain’s “master clock” in the hypothalamus aligns daily cycles of metabolism, blood pressure, and hormone release
- Disruption from shift work, late-night light, irregular meals, or poor sleep desynchronizes these rhythms
- This misalignment leads to insulin resistance, chronic inflammation, and higher risk for obesity, hypertension, and heart disease
Reestablishing alignment involves timed exposure to light, consistent sleep and meal schedules, and regular exercise. Morning light, early-day activity, and minimizing light at night help restore the body’s natural timing.
The bigger picture
Circadian health is as vital as diet and exercise for heart protection. Supporting the body’s biological clock keeps metabolism, vascular function, and hormone balance in sync—reducing the long-term risk of cardiovascular disease and metabolic disorders.”
