Pat Garcia-Gonzalez on Transforming Lives: How a Small Grant Saved a Father’s Cancer Treatment
Pat Garcia-Gonzalez, Chief Executive Officer at The Max Foundation, posted on LinkedIn:
“I’ll never forget a moment in Ethiopia last year. A patient had come for his checkup and told the doctor, ‘When my appointment is coming, I get very anxious.’ I thought he meant he was anxious about his treatment. But instead, he said, ‘I have five children. I make $30 a month as a driver. When I come to this hospital, I feel I’m taking the bread out of my children’s mouths. This is the last time I’m coming. I’m abandoning my treatment.’
That day, we were lucky. We had just launched a program to provide small grants to help patients cover transportation costs, and he was able to continue treatment.
This is what breaking barriers looks like.
This year, The Max Foundation made a bold commitment: to more than double our impact and reach 100,000 patients annually by 2030.
Every person living with cancer is more than a number. Providing access to treatment means a life changed, a family strengthened, a future made possible.
As 2025 comes to a close, I invite you to join us. Your gift today will help us transform the lives of 100,000 people around the world—one patient at a time. Plus, every donation will be matched up to $10,000, doubling your impact!”
