Pouyan Ebrahimi on Maternal Stroke: 270 Million Births, One Alarming Risk

”270 Million Births, One Alarming Risk: Maternal Stroke
I am pleased to share our latest publication in BMC Pregnancy and Childbirth (Global incidence and risk factors of pregnancy-related stroke: a systematic review and meta-analysis of over 270 million women)
This study provides critical insights into the epidemiology and risk factors of maternal stroke.
Although my current research focus has shifted toward oncology, with the long-term goal of contributing to cancer treatment, there are moments when certain clinical questions still compel my curiosity.
One such question was how a condition as severe as stroke can affect nearly one in three pregnant women.
Our findings reveal that factors such as migraine, dyslipidemia, alcohol use, tobacco smoking, sickle cell disorders, coagulopathy, cardiovascular diseases, preeclampsia/eclampsia/gestational hypertension, and postpartum hemorrhage are significantly associated with increased stroke risk during pregnancy.
Sometimes, we tend to overlook the importance of certain conditions until their impact becomes undeniable.
I hope this study helps raise awareness about maternal stroke and inspires efforts to mitigate its preventable risk factors.
A special thanks to Springer and the dedicated reviewers for their valuable feedback and efforts in improving the quality of this work.”
