Mahmoud Smida on Rahma’s DVT Journey Post-Stroke

Mahmoud Smida, Oncoorthopedic surgeon at Kassab Institute of Orthopedics, Full Professor at Tunis Faculty Of Medicine, shared on LinkedIn:

”At 14 months old, Rahma was hospitalized for pandiaphyseal osteomyelitis of the left femur complicated by deep vein thrombosis.

The causative agent was PVL-positive MRSA.

She was hospitalized in intensive care and escaped death.

She underwent multiple surgeries (more than 15) on her femur in three different countries.

However, the resulting anatomical and functional impairments were significant.

She came to see me at the age of 10 with a significant shortening of the femur secondary to septic epiphysiodesis of the distal growth plate and a non-aligned femoral pseudarthrosis.

We began the journey of bone equalization and consolidation together and we have now begun the final kilometers of the marathon.

We became friends, even more than that and we play together and exchange autographs.

Rahma missed school, family, and especially her childhood, but she preserved her smile and her innocence.
