Sonal Sonu: Why Incompatible Plasma Can Cause More Severe Reactions Than Incompatible Red Cells

Sonal Sonu, Transfusion Medicine Specialist, posted on LinkedIn:

”In transfusion practice, compatibility involves more than red cells alone.

While incompatible red cell transfusions typically involve recipient antibodies acting against donor antigens, incompatible plasma transfusions can result in donor antibodies rapidly attacking the patient’s own red cells.

This can lead to severe intravascular hemolysis and life-threatening complications, underscoring the critical importance of plasma compatibility.

A clear understanding of immunohematology principles remains central to safe and effective transfusion medicine.”
