”Very happy to see our work on VWF pharmokinetics in surgery now published in Blood Advances.
In this study, we developed a population PK/PD model of high-purity von Willebrand factor to better understand treatment response and variability during surgery in patients with von Willebrand disease, highlighting the need for more individualized dosing strategies.
Nearly 100 years after Erik von Willebrand first described the disease in 1926, we are still working to better understand and optimize its management.
We are especially grateful to the patients who contributed to this research, and to the many collaborators across Lille, Saint-Étienne and the HITh lab Inserm in Paris, alongside Prof Sophie Susen and Prof Xavier Delavenne.”

How can we better tailor treatment for patients with von Willebrand disease undergoing surgery?
In this study, we developed a population PK/PD model of high-purity VWF using data from 74 patients and 99 surgeries, revealing substantial variability in treatment response and identifying key determinants such as age, bodyweight, blood group, and VWD type.
These findings support the development of personalized dosing strategies to improve perioperative management.
This collaborative work was co-led by Prof Sophie Susen (CHU de Lille) and Prof Xavier Delavenne (CHU de Saint-Étienne).
