Alfonso J. Tafur: We Need to Rethink What Drives Disparities in Blood Clot Outcomes
Alfonso J. Tafur, Vascular Medicine Fellowship Program Director at University of Chicago, Director of Vascular Medicine Department at NorthShore University, shared on LinkedIn:
”We need to rethink what drives disparities in blood clot outcomes.
Our analysis through the RIETE registry found something that challenges assumptions: once you adjust for comorbidities and geography, most racial differences in VTE outcomes disappear.
What persists is where the patient was treated — not who the patient is.
That distinction matters.
If we’re serious about personalized medicine, we have to look beyond the patient and into the system around them.”
