Nicolas Gendron: Challenges in Measuring NETs in Clinical Samples
Nicolas Gendron, Research Fellow and Hematologist at Boston Children’s Hospital, shared a post on LinkedIn about a recent article he and his colleagues co-authored, adding:
“Happy to share that our work on NET measurement in clinical samples has just been published online in the RPTH Journal
Neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs) are key players in both arterial and venous thrombosis, but their detection in blood remains challenging.
In this study of patients with critical limb-threatening ischemia and controls:
- NET markers (MPO–DNA complexes) were detectable in serum but not in plasma
- The type of blood sample (serum versus plasma) appears to impact NET measurement.
- Importantly, serum detection may be influenced by coagulation-related processes, a point that should be carefully considered.
This highlights the urgent need for standardization of preanalytical conditions in clinical studies.
Congrats to the team.”
