How One Patient’s Story Shows the Need for Fair Care – ASH

American Society of Hematology – ASH shared a post on LinkedIn about a recent article by Robert Negrin, published in The Hematologist:

”On a medical mission to rural Cambodia, ASH President Robert Negrin met Heng, a young woman with leukemia whose fate was shaped less by medicine than by where she happened to be born. While he raised funds to support her treatment and connect her with care in Bangkok, none of his efforts could ultimately help Heng overcome the brutal unfairness of the ‘lottery of birth.’

In his President’s Column, Negrin reflects on his friendship with Heng and her family, the countless patients who tragically never receive treatment, and how ASH’s global programs, from training hematologists to building transplant capacity and expanding newborn screening, are concrete ways our community is pushing back against these inequities.”
