Sickle Cell Disease Care Varies by Region – ASH
American Society of Hematology (ASH) shared a post on LinkedIn:
”Sickle cell disease is the most common inherited blood disorder worldwide, yet patient experiences vary significantly by region.
Data from the Sickle Cell World Assessment Survey (SWAY) show that individuals in sub-Saharan Africa are less likely to know their sickle cell variant and use standard treatments, including over-the-counter pain medications, antibiotics, and folic acid.
They are also more likely to manage vaso-occlusive crises at home or rely on alternative approaches.
These results reflect variation in diagnosis, treatment patterns, and care delivery across regions.”
