Melissa Hollo: Intravenous Iron Shows Better Results Than Oral Iron in Pregnancy
Melissa Hollo, Director of Project Management at hc1 and Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker, shared Robert Brown’s post on LinkedIn, adding:
”A well-done study in Obstetrics and Gynecology reinforcing what many of us are seeing in practice:
Intravenous ferumoxytol isn’t just an alternative to oral iron in pregnancy, it’s more effective.
This randomized trial shows:
- Significantly greater increases in hemoglobin with IV ferumoxytol vs oral ferrous sulfate
- Meaningful improvements in ferritin and iron indices
- Better correction of anemia by the time of delivery
For a condition as common, and consequential, as iron deficiency anemia in pregnancy, this matters.
We cannot continue to rely on oral iron alone when:
- Absorption is variable
- Tolerability limits adherence
- Time to correction is often too slow for the peripartum window
This is exactly why earlier identification and more effective treatment pathways are critical.
The takeaway is clear:
If we are serious about improving maternal outcomes, IV iron should be considered sooner, not later.
Learn how we’re supporting earlier maternal risk detection.”
Robert Brown, Academic Obstetrician, shared a post on LinkedIn about a recent article by Irogue I Igbinosa, published in Obstetrics and Gynecology։
