José Antonio García Erce: Where Is the Limit in Blood Donation Age?
José Antonio García Erce, Director of the Donation Center, Navarre Health Service (Osasunbidea), shared Stephen Cornelissen’s post on LinkedIn:
“Where is the limit?
There is growing evidence of the safety, and possibly benefit, of blood donation by donors over the age of 75 and up to 80.
And while why is it still limited in some centers to 65 or 70 years of age?
Evidence and data are needed to be able to give useful and fair recommendations, and not mere opinions.
Scientific rigor is requested.”
Stephen Cornelissen, CEO of Australian Red Cross Lifeblood, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“It might surprise you to learn that there are more than 1,700 donors giving life in their 80s, and Australian Red Cross Lifeblood‘s research shows older donors are the most reliable and consistent donors!
Earlier this year, Ian Playford turned 90 years old and made his 550th donation – a massive achievement 70 years in the making!
His commendable dedication to blood donation has saved countless lives, and I encourage everyone who is considering donating for the first time to check their eligibility and not rule themselves out.”
