Daniel Ben-Mordechay: Deep Vein Thrombosis and the Power of POCUS
Daniel Ben-Mordechay, Chief Executive Officer at Orimed GTD, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“Deep Vein Thrombosis and the Power of POCUS
Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) is a potentially life threatening condition that requires rapid recognition and timely treatment.
When a thrombus forms inside a deep vein, most commonly in the lower extremities, it can obstruct venous flow and may eventually embolize to the lungs, causing pulmonary embolism.
Point-of-Care Ultrasound (POCUS) has become an essential bedside tool for the rapid evaluation of suspected DVT. Using a high frequency linear probe, clinicians can perform a focused compression ultrasound examination of the femoral and popliteal veins.
The key diagnostic principle is simple: a normal vein should fully collapse with gentle probe compression. Failure of the vein to compress strongly suggests the presence of an intraluminal thrombus.
POCUS enables clinicians to assess patients in real time, directly at the bedside, without delays associated with formal imaging pathways.
This rapid diagnostic capability improves clinical decision making, allows earlier initiation of anticoagulation when indicated, and ultimately enhances patient safety.
As ultrasound continues to expand beyond the radiology department, POCUS is increasingly becoming an extension of the physical examination, allowing clinicians to visualize pathology and translate clinical suspicion into immediate diagnostic insight.”
