Andrea Goldsmith: Advancing Stroke Care Through Stony Brook Medicine’s Mobile Stroke Unit Program

”Excellence is the standard across Stony Brook Medicine.
It shapes how we educate and train the next generation of healthcare professionals, drive innovative and life-changing research, and deliver compassionate care to communities across Long Island.
The impact of Stony Brook Medicine as a unified and state-of-the-art academic health system is undeniable, and it was on full display during my Inauguration Week as we carved out a full day of the festivities to showcase and celebrate Stony Brook Medicine.
I had the opportunity to spend that entire day with the students, faculty, staff, and healthcare professionals who are making this impact possible.
I was excited to see how we are driving innovative life-saving medical research and clinical care at the intersection of medicine and technology, including through the use of state-of-the-art surgical robotics platforms, which I had an opportunity to operate myself. I was impressed to learn about Stony Brook’s Mobile Stroke Unit Program, which was launched in 2019 and remains Long Island’s only program of its kind.
I was awestruck to tour the mobile stroke unit ambulance, with its portable cat scan that determines what type of stroke the patient is having, and where they are having it, in order to administer the appropriate medicine immediately rather than after the excruciating minutes it takes to get to a hospital and perform that assessment.
Given that approximately 1.9 billion neurons die every minute in an untreated stroke, I felt immense pride in the creativity, innovation, and boldness of our mobile stroke program.
Throughout the day, the inspiring presentations of our students and faculty highlighted the excellence and breadth of work taking place across Stony Brook Medicine.
I was energized and inspired to see the brilliance, devotion and passion of our healthcare leaders, staff, faculty, and students who are reimagining medicine, health, and wellness to benefit the communities we serve, the country, and the world.
As I shared in my investiture address, one of our aspirational goals in our ASPIRE 2035 strategic vision is reimagining medicine, health, and wellness for all.
We will do this by bringing care and essential services directly to our community members where they are making the healthcare system easier to navigate to ensure equitable outcomes, driving breakthroughs at the intersection of medicine and technology, and bridging the gap between scientific discoveries and actionable health care solutions.
I’m excited to be on this journey with Stony Brook Medicine to enhance its excellence, breadth, impact, and service to our communities over the next decade and beyond.”
