Vivek Sinha: The Science Behind a CBC Test

Vivek Sinha, Student at Ganpat University, shared a post on LinkedIn:

“CBC Test: The Story Hidden in Your Blood

Complete Blood Count (CBC) Test

A CBC (Complete Blood Count) is a blood test that measures different components of blood such as red blood cells, white blood cells, hemoglobin, hematocrit, and platelets.

Use: Used to evaluate overall health and detect a wide range of disorders like anemia, infection, and blood diseases.

CBC analyzes cellular components of blood.

  • RBC (Red Blood Cells): Carry oxygen
  • WBC (White Blood Cells): Fight infection
  • Hemoglobin (Hb): Oxygen-carrying protein
  • Hematocrit (Hct): percentage of RBC in blood
  • Platelets: Help in blood clotting

How is the Test Performed?

Procedure:

  • Blood sample collected from vein
  • Sample sent to laboratory
  • Analyzed using automated hematology analyzer

Preparation:

  • Usually no fasting required
  • Inform doctor about medications

Role of CBC Test:

A routine diagnostic test for general health check.

Use:

  • Detect anemia
  • Identify infections
  • Diagnose blood disorders
  • Monitor treatment (e.g., chemotherapy)

Normal Range (Approx):

Hemoglobin:

  • Men: 13–17 g/dL
  • Women: 12–15 g/dL
  • WBC: 4,000–11,000 cells/µL
  • Platelets: 150,000–450,000/µL.”
