Tagreed Alkaltham: Are You Eligible to Donate Blood?
Tagreed Alkaltham, Transfusion Medicine Lab Supervisor at KSMC, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“Are You Eligible to Donate Blood?
It’s not about perfection.
It’s about safety.
Not everyone can donate blood.
And that’s not a limitation…
It’s protection.
Because in transfusion medicine,
safety is never negotiable.
Before you give blood,
there is a question that matters more than willingness:
Are you eligible
What does that really mean?
It means your body is ready…
and the blood you give is safe
for someone who depends on it.
It starts with a simple questionnaire:
Before any test…
before any needle…
You will be asked a few important questions.
Not to judge you…
But to protect you
and protect the patient.
Because your answers help determine
whether it is the right time for you to donate.
Your health comes first:
You should feel well.
No active illness. No recent infections.
Because donation should never harm the donor.
Timing matters:
Recent procedures, travel, or medications
may require waiting.
Not rejection…
just the right time.
Readiness matters:
- Age: 18 and above
- Weight: ≥ 50 kg
Because donation is a physiological process…
and the body must be ready.
Before donation… there is a quick check:
Simple.
Routine.
But critical.
- Blood pressure within safe range
- Pulse: regular (60–100 bpm)
- Hemoglobin within acceptable levels
- Temperature: ≤ 37.5°C
- Arm assessment: Both arms are examined for to ensure there are no signs that may compromise recipient safety
This is not just a routine check.
It is a safety filter.
Because in transfusion medicine,
every detail matters.
Being deferred…
does not mean being excluded.
It means the system is working
exactly as it should.
Not everyone can donate today…
But everyone can be part of saving lives.
Because in the end,
the safest blood… is the blood we carefully choose.”
