Yusra Junaid: Two New Publications in Thrombosis and Cancer Research

Yusra Junaid, Fourth-Year Medical Student at Dow Medical College, shared a post on LinkedIn, about recent articles she and her colleagues co-authored, adding:

“I’m excited to share two of my recent publications.

1.World Journal of Clinical Cases

‘Direct oral anticoagulants vs low-molecular-weight heparins for cancer-associated thromboembolism’

An updated systematic review and meta-analysis comparing DOACs and LMWH for treating cancer-associated thrombosis (CAT) – a major driver of morbidity and mortality in oncology patients.

  • DOACs showed comparable protection against venous thromboembolism recurrence and severe bleeding overall versus LMWH
  • Apixaban specifically showed a significant reduction in VTE recurrence
  • Metastasis status and platelet count emerged as key moderators of bleeding and mortality outcomes
  • Findings support a move toward personalized, risk-stratified anticoagulation strategies in cancer care rather than a one-size-fits-all approach.

2.Cardio-Oncology

‘Heterogeneity in proportional cardiovascular co-listing on cancer death certificates in the United States: a national multiple cause-of-death analysis, 1999–2020’

We analyzed 56M plus US death certificates (CDC WONDER, 1999–2020) using a novel Proportional Mortality Ratio (PMR) framework to track cardiovascular disease co-listing on cancer death certificates.

  • Cardiovascular co-listing followed a reverse J-shaped pattern across the lifespan – highest in young adults (ages 15–24, PMR 1.83), dipping to a nadir at 55–64 (PMR 0.34), then rising again in older age
  • PMRs rose significantly across all adult age groups from 1999–2020, with the steepest climb in the 55–64 bracket (plus 1.69%/year)
  • Young-adult elevations were consistently higher among men, metropolitan residents, and Hispanic/Latino decedents
  • Leukemia showed the strongest cardiovascular co-listing signal in young adults; colon cancer showed no significant elevation.

Grateful to my co-authors for their valuable contributions to both studies, looking forward to continued collaboration on future research.”
