Marie Luise Hütter-Krönke: Can a Short Course of BCMA-Targeted Therapy Induce Long-Term Remission in Refractory Autoimmune Disease?
Marie Luise Hütter-Krönke, Senior Physician in Hematology and Oncology at Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin, shared a post on LinkedIn about a recent article she and her colleagues co-authored, published in Blood Immunology and Cellular Therapy, adding:
“Can a short course of BCMA-targeted therapy induce long-term remission in refractory autoimmune disease?
I am delighted to share our latest publication, reporting three patients with severe, multiply refractory immune thrombocytopenia (ITP) who achieved rapid and sustained treatment-free remission following therapy with the BCMA×CD3 bispecific antibody teclistamab.
For ITP patients who have exhausted multiple treatment options, durable remissions remain one of the greatest unmet needs. Seeing these patients recover—and remain off therapy—has been incredibly rewarding for our entire team.
Our key findings:
- Rapid platelet recovery within 4, 9 and 23 days.
- Discontinuation of corticosteroids and all other ITP-directed therapies.
- Sustained treatment-free remission for up to 9 months of follow-up.
- Resolution of autoimmune hemolytic anemia in the Evans syndrome patient.
- Favorable safety profile with manageable adverse events.
Although this is an early proof-of-concept case series, these observations support the hypothesis that targeting BCMA-positive long-lived plasma cells may represent a promising therapeutic strategy for severe autoimmune cytopenias and warrant prospective clinical investigation.
This work would not have been possible without an outstanding multidisciplinary collaboration.”
