Strengthening the Public Health Infrastructure for Blood Disorders- ASH

American Society of Hematology shared a post on LinkedIn:

ASH attended a congressional briefing hosted by the Friends of NCBDDD, where one of our Blood partners, the Hemophilia Federation of America (HFA), highlighted the critical role of the CDC’s Division of Blood Disorders and Public Health Genomics and the operational challenges currently affecting its ability to carry out its mission.

For more than 50 years, the Division has supported public health surveillance, laboratory services, data collection, and programs that improve outcomes for individuals living with hemophilia, sickle cell disease, thalassemia, blood clots, and other blood disorders.

These efforts play a vital role in informing clinical care, strengthening public health, and preventing serious complications.

Throughout the summer, ASH has worked alongside HFA and other Blood partners to educate both House and Senate appropriators and authorizers on the current status of the Division.

Our advocacy has focused on a simple message: although the Division and its programs continue to receive congressional support, significant staffing disruptions have prevented it from operating at full capacity.

These are congressionally supported programs that are funded but not functioning as intended.

ASH appreciates the opportunity to partner with the broader blood community to raise awareness of these challenges and advocate for the leadership and staffing necessary to ensure the Division can fully carry out the mission Congress has directed and funded.”
