Why Female Haematological Disorders Require Dedicated Global Action – The Lancet Haematology

“Women have unique presentations and consequences of haematological disorders, including anaemia, undiagnosed and undertreated bleeding disorders, and hormone-related thrombosis and bleeding!

Many disparities between males and females begin in adolescence, with heavy menstrual bleeding the first sign of a bleeding disorder, but most females are not screened for these diseases.

In the reproductive years, the prevalence of anaemia is 4x higher in women than in men. Pregnant women are at risk of many preventable and treatable haematological conditions, including iron-deficiency anaemia, VTE, and obstetric haemorrhage.
Post-partum haemorrhage is the leading cause of post-partum mortality. During perimenopause, women are at continued risk of erratic and heavy menstrual bleeding, and the lack of low- or no-clot-risk hormonal therapies limits treatment options for some women during menopause.
To address these many issues, the Commission sets out ten recommendations for regulators, international health bodies, professional societies, funders, and governments.”
