Deborah Siega: What Predicts Bleeding in Anticoagulated Patients
Deborah Siega, Associate Professor, Department of Medicine at University of Ottawa, shared a post on LinkedIn about a recent article she and her colleagues co-authored, published in Circulation, adding:
“Newly published in Circulation
Bleeding remains the major complication of oral anticoagulation, but are we focusing on the right bleeding outcome?
In this COMBINE-AF individual patient meta-analysis of 73,737 patients, we found:
- 1 in 4 patients experienced clinically relevant extracranial bleeding over ~2 years
- Clinically relevant non-major bleeding accounted for the majority of bleeding events
- Low hemoglobin, impaired kidney function, prior stroke, cancer and Asian ancestry were among the strongest predictors
- Known risk factors explained only ~2/3 of bleeding risk, far less than for stroke or MI, underscoring the need for novel predictors
The next step: understanding what these bleeds actually mean for patients!”
