Zain Khalpey: Left Atrial Appendage Closure vs Oral Anticoagulation in Atrial Fibrillation
Zain Khalpey, Adjunct Assistant Professor of Surgery at Columbia University Irving Medical Center, shared a post on LinkedIn about a recent article by Paschalis Karakasis, published in EP Europace, adding:
“Left Atrial Appendage Closure vs Oral Anticoagulation in Atrial Fibrillation.
A meta analysis of six randomized trials involving more than 7,000 patients compared left atrial appendage closure with oral anticoagulation for stroke prevention in atrial fibrillation.
LAAC was associated with fewer nonprocedural clinically relevant bleeding events, but a higher risk of ischemic stroke or systemic embolism.
There were no significant differences in overall stroke, major bleeding, hemorrhagic stroke, or mortality.
The findings suggest that LAAC should not be viewed as an equal replacement for anticoagulation in every patient.
Its role remains most relevant for carefully selected individuals who cannot tolerate long-term anticoagulation or have significant bleeding concerns.”
