George Dimitrov: SII and Cancer – What Can This Marker Really Tell Us
George Dimitrov, Assistant Professor at Medical University of Sofia, MUS, shared a post on LinkedIn about a recent article he and his colleagues co-authored, published in Diseases, adding:
“Our second cardio-oncology collaboration from University Hospital ‘Tsaritsa Yoanna–ISUL’, looking at the systemic immune–inflammation index (SII) in 330 patients with solid malignancies.
Interestingly, SII did not help distinguish patients with cancer-associated thrombosis (AUC 0.515), but higher SII was independently associated with recorded all-cause mortality (OR 1.31 per 1000-unit increase, p equals 0.016).
Perhaps SII is less useful as a thrombosis marker and more reflective of the overall inflammatory burden of cancer.
A nice example of how sometimes the most interesting finding is not the one you set out to find.”
