Tom Van den Hoek: Warburg Effect Mimicking Refractory Shock in Cancer-Associated PE

Tom Van den Hoek, Cardiology Resident at Jessa Ziekenhuis, shared a post on LinkedIn about a recent article he and his colleagues co-authored, published in European Heart Journal – Case Reports, adding:

”New Case Report Published.

I am excited to share that our case report, ‘Potential pitfalls in diagnostic and therapeutic decision-making in pulmonary embolism-related obstructive shock in patients with cancer,’ has been published in European Heart Journal – Case Reports.

This case report describes how malignancy-associated metabolic alterations, such as the Warburg effect, can interfere with therapy in acute pulmonary embolism. Awareness of alternative causes of hyperlactatemia is essential to avoid unnecessary invasive interventions and to optimize individualized treatment strategies in cancer-associated PE.
