Sanjiv Beri: Know Your Blood Type – It Could Save a Life
Sanjiv Beri, Healthspan Strategist-Mentor, Trainer and Speaker at S.Beri, shared a post on LinkedIn:
“I have AB negative blood. Early 30s. One phone call I still remember.
Someone had been in a severe road accident.
They needed AB negative, and there was not much time to find it.
My parents had registered our family’s blood types with blood banks since was a child.
A quiet precaution, kept on file for years before it ever mattered.
That day, it became the reason someone lived.
I stepped in. No delay. No searching for an answer nobody had.
I remember exactly how that felt.
Knowing something that simple could be the difference between someone living or not.
The reason is smaller than the moment.
Red blood cells carry markers on their surface.
Antigens. Type A carries the A antigen. Type B carries the B antigen.
AB carries both. O carries neither.
Then there is the Rh factor. The plus or minus.
It decides whether your immune system treats a donation as a threat or a match.
Get it wrong, and your own antibodies attack it.
A reaction called agglutination.
Get it right, and the transfusion simply becomes part of you.
AB negative can only receive from a handful of types.
But because it carries no A or B antibodies of its own, its plasma can go to almost anyone.
Rare in what it can take. Generous in what it can give.
I did not understand any of that biology as a child, filling out forms in a blood bank office with my parents.
I understood it the day someone’s life depended on paperwork nobody else had filled out.
My own children know their blood types now.
Documented. Not a guess.
You have seen your blood type once.
On a donor card, a hospital form, an old ID.
You have not thought about it since.
Until the day someone needs to know it faster than you can find out.
The information that saves someone’s life is rarely complicated.
It just has to already exist somewhere.”
