Mohamed Ismail: Managing Extensive Iliofemoral and Inferior Vena Cava DVT

Mohamed Ismail, Head of Vascular Surgery at Coswig Heart Center, shared a post on LinkedIn:

“Endovascular Innovation: Managing Extensive Iliofemoral and IVC DVT

Treating extensive deep vein thrombosis (DVT) originating in the femoral veins and extending into the inferior vena cava (IVC) requires rapid, definitive thrombus removal to prevent post-thrombotic syndrome (PTS) and optimize long-term outcomes.

In a complex case, our team successfully restored full venous patency in a single session using the Inari Medical platform:

  • ClotTriever System for targeted, coring-based mechanical removal of acute and subacute thrombus from the deep femoral and iliac segments.
  • FlowTriever System for large-bore aspiration across the vena cava to clear extensive IVC burden cleanly and efficiently.

Using this purely mechanical, non-thrombolytic strategy allowed for immediate symptom relief and flow restoration while completely avoiding lytic-related bleeding risks and ICU monitoring.

Complex endovascular achievements rely entirely on great collaboration. High-caliber teamwork makes all the difference.

A special thank to the Head of Department Kareem El Sherbiny, and our consultants Susanne Mahlke and Aminu Tijjani Mohammad alongside the entire team for their dedication and coordination throughout this case.”
