Jacek Lesinski: The Importance of Whole Blood and Plasma Donation

Jacek Lesinski, a 3rd-year medical laboratory technology apprentice at Rheinisches Bildungszentrum Köln in Germany, specializing in morphological hematology and microscopy, shared a post on  LinkedIn:

“Blood Donations

When people think about blood donation, they usually picture the classic whole blood donation. But there is also plasma donation – both are essential and make a big difference in patient care.

Whole Blood Donation
• Processed into:
• Red cell concentrates (RBCs) – for patients with blood loss or anemia
• Platelet concentrates – for patients with bleeding disorders or after chemotherapy
• Plasma – e.g. for clotting disorders

Plasma Donation
• Plasma is used in pharmaceutical manufacturing, for example to produce:
• Immunoglobulins (for people with immune deficiencies)
• Albumin (for burn victims or shock patients)
• Coagulation factors (for patients with hemophilia)

Additional Benefits for Donors
• Regular health checks (blood pressure, hemoglobin, infectious disease screening)
• Financial compensation for plasma donations (depending on the country)
• A sense of wellbeing: studies show regular donation can stimulate new blood cell production

To summarize: these donations are of high importance to us, to lab staff, doctors and patients. And still many people do not donate blood, of course there can be several reasons to abstain however many people just forget this topic.

Every healthy person should donate blood!”
